pecuniary /pɪˈkjuːniəri/ [adj]: monetary 金銭上の
*発音注意 「ぺきゅ」ではなく、「ぴきゅ」

Parents' pecuniary advantage affords better education for their children, securing continual affluence one generation after another.


sumptuous /ˈsʌmptʃuəs/ [adj]: very expensive and looking very impressive 豪華な、贅沢な

His house was furnished with expensive furniture and every room looked sumptuous.


balk (American) / baulk (British) /bɔːk/ [v]: to be unwilling to do something or become involved in something because it is difficult, dangerous, etc. 躊躇する、難色を示す

If you are parsimonious and baulk at the prices of foreign holidays, do not despair. There are myriads of footpaths in Britain. Enjoy walking!


rife /raɪf/ [adj]: widespread, full of sth bad or unpleasant 広がって、充満して

The feeling of anger and despair is fife on streets in Athens.

revile /rɪˈvaɪl/ [v]: to criticize somebody/something in a way that shows how much you dislike them 罵倒する
